Frequently Asked Questions

Why don’t you send out gold packs?

There are a number of reasons for this.

  1. Gold Pack companies take time posting out packs to you, which you then have to send back to them. The turnaround time from your initial enquiry to payment can be a week or longer. By posting your gold to CFYG you will receive your payment into your account within 24 hours.
  2. CFYG offer a much better price for your gold. With low running costs we are able to offer much more for your gold in comparison.
  3. A lot of gold pack companies advertise on television and radio and due to this have high advertising costs. In most cases they will offer 50% or less of the true value of your gold in order to cover their huge advertising costs. Because they generally do not publish their rates, you will not realise until they contact you with their low offer.
  4. CFYG are a trustworthy and reputable company. Majority of the gold pack companies have been offering poor amounts for gold that they receive and a number of them are currently under investigation by Trading Standards. (Please contact Trading Standards for information.)
  5. Gold packs that are sent out are usually only insured for up to £750. By sending to CFYG you can add more insurance at the Post Office, if necessary, thus covering yourself properly.

Will I get the price on the website?

The price shown on the calculators is the price that we are paying now based on the live market rate. The price that we offer you will be based on the live market rate when we receive your items. Because the market rate is constantly moving, this offer may be slightly higher, or lower that the price shown when you decided to send in your items.

What if I have more than one carat?

Fine with us, we separate each item and give you a cash valuation for each. Take a look at our price charts for different carats to see the way that prices have changed over time and our scrap gold calculator to see what we are currently offering for different carats.

Does the gold have to be hallmarked?

We will buy all gold whether it is hallmarked or not. We test every item to establish the precise gold content and carat value in order to give you the best possible price. Most gold jewellery purchased in the UK should be hallmarked but a lot of jewellery bought overseas is not. Take a look at our Hallmarks page to learn how to interpret hallmarks.

I do not have accurate scales, what should I do?

Don’t worry; use whatever is to hand such as kitchen scales to give you a rough estimate of weight. When we receive your consignment we will weigh it to the nearest 0.1 Gram using our calibrated and certified scales. See our Weighing Your Precious Metal Items page for additional tips or to source your own scales.

Why don’t you buy scrap jewellery with high cadmium content?

Cadmium has been added to certain gold and silver jewellery for many years as it can add to the lustre and shine of precious metal jewellery. Unfortunately, Cadmium is carcinogenic, and its use has become strictly controlled in modern jewellery production. We melt and recycle all precious metals that we buy, and we are restricted to a maximum Cadmium content of 1% when melting items, as a safety measure for refinery personnel. We therefore cannot process precious metals with a Cadmium content above 1%.

How promptly will I receive payment?

Once your gold has been valued and you accept the offer, payment can be made in one of three ways:

  2. We will send a cheque out to you within 24 hours.

What are your business hours?

Monday to Thursday: 9.30am - 4.30pm. Friday: 9.30am - 3.30pm.

What about gemstones in my jewellery?

We do not buy gemstones. Any gemstones within items of scrap gold received will not be returned as removal of the stones is time consuming and on most occasions the labour charged incurred by us will far outweigh any small profit margin we may have in the item of gold. We recommend that, if a stone is of sentimental value, you remove the stone before sending the item to us.

Can I change my mind?

Of course! When we have weighed and assayed your items we will contact you with our offer. You are free to accept or reject the offer in full or in part. If you choose to reject our offer we will arrange for your items to be returned to you by Royal Mail Special Delivery but this return will be at your expense. We also reserve the right to make a charge for testing items subject to a rejected offer.

What happens if the market value of my gold changes after I've sent in my items?

We base our prices on the London Gold Fix price for Gold which is set at 10:30am and 3pm daily. Our valuation of your items will be based on the London Gold Fix price applicable when we receive your items. We will email or telephone you with our offer for your precious metals and that offer will be valid for 24 hours from the time that the email is sent by us, or from the time that we contact you by telephone. If you decide to reject our offer for your precious metals they will be returned to you by Royal Mail Special Delivery.

Please remember that we reserve the right to charge for postage and packaging expenses if we return items to you.

If my gold weight does not agree with yours, what happens?

We have specialist gold scales and if there are discrepancies on weight we notify you immediately.

What is the Faster Payment System (FPS)

If your bank subscribes to the FPS system, then we can make Bank Transfers to you on the same day and you will generally have cleared funds in your bank account within 2hrs at a small charge of £5.
